Key takeaways
- Rabies vaccination is described as legally mandatory for cats and dogs in the UAE, with an annual booster. Confirm the current rule with your vet, Dubai Municipality or MOCCAE.
- Vets call a small group of vaccines “core”: for dogs, distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus; for cats, panleukopenia, calicivirus and herpesvirus.
- Puppies and kittens need several doses, finishing at 16 weeks or older, then a booster. Your vet will set the exact schedule.
- Proof of vaccination is needed to register a pet, to travel and, in most cases, to use boarding, daycare and grooming.
- Keep the vaccination record safe and photographed. A digital record makes renewals, registration and trips much easier.
Vaccination is one of those topics where everyone has an opinion and the paperwork is surprisingly important. In the UAE it matters twice over: it protects your pet from serious diseases, and the vaccination record unlocks registration, boarding, grooming and travel. This guide explains the basics, separates what the UAE requires from what vets recommend, and shows where different sources do not quite agree.
It is general information. Your own vet will tailor a plan to your pet’s age, health and lifestyle, and that advice comes first.
Is rabies vaccination compulsory in the UAE?
Rabies vaccination is described as legally mandatory for all cats and dogs in the UAE, with an annual booster to stay compliant. That is the position set out in an insurer’s guide dated August 2026, and it matches how clinics work in practice: the yearly rabies visit is also when registration is renewed. Because rules can change, confirm the current requirement with your vet, Dubai Municipality or the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
Rabies is one of the vaccines that most countries treat differently from the rest. Veterinary organisations note that in many places rabies vaccination is a legal requirement and is generally also required for international travel. In the UAE it also sits at the centre of the import rules, which we explain in our guide to bringing a pet into the UAE.
What are “core” vaccines?
Core vaccines are those that the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) says all dogs and cats should receive, wherever they live, because they protect against severe, life-threatening diseases found around the world.
| Species | Core vaccines protect against | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dogs | Canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus, canine parvovirus type 2 | Usually given together in a combined vaccine |
| Cats | Feline parvovirus (panleukopenia), feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus-1 | Usually given together in a combined vaccine |
| Both | Rabies | Core where rabies is present, and a legal requirement in the UAE |
Non-core vaccines are the ones your pet needs only if their location or lifestyle puts them at risk, for example vaccines against kennel cough for dogs that board often, or against feline leukaemia for cats that go outdoors. Your vet will tell you which of these make sense. WSAVA’s guidance is that vaccines should not be given needlessly, which is a good reminder to ask “why this one, and how often?”.
What does the puppy and kitten schedule look like?
Puppies and kittens need a series of core vaccines rather than a single injection. The reason is that antibodies from the mother can interfere with early vaccines, and the amount varies from litter to litter, so vets give several doses and make sure the last one is given at 16 weeks of age or older.
WSAVA’s guidelines recommend starting core vaccination at 6 to 8 weeks, repeating every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, followed by a booster at 6 or 12 months. The exact number of visits depends on the age at which you start, and your vet will map it out.
- First weeks: keep your puppy or kitten away from areas used by unvaccinated animals until your vet says the series is complete.
- Rabies: a UAE insurer’s guide says the first rabies vaccine is usually given between 12 and 16 weeks of age, with a booster a year later.
- Adopting an adult: bring any previous records, and your vet will decide what is needed. If there are no records, your vet will decide how to proceed.
How often do adult pets need boosters?
This is the part where guidance differs, so here is the honest picture. WSAVA says core vaccines should not be given more often than every three years after the 6- or 12-month booster, because immunity can last many years. In the UAE, however, rabies is boosted annually to meet the local requirement, and many clinics offer yearly packages that bundle the exam, the rabies vaccine and other vaccines.
Both things can be true: the science supports longer intervals for some vaccines, while local rules, clinic policies and boarding facilities often ask for annual records. A sensible approach is to follow your vet’s plan, ask them to explain the interval for each vaccine, and keep the paperwork current for anything that has a legal or practical deadline, such as rabies.
Ask your vet: which of these is the law, which is the advice, and which is the clinic’s package?
How much do pet vaccinations cost in the UAE?
Prices vary by clinic and emirate. An August 2026 insurer guide gave these ranges as a rough guide only.
| Item | Reported range (AED) |
|---|---|
| Single rabies vaccine | 100 to 300 |
| Annual package for an adult dog or cat (rabies plus other core vaccines, exam, often a microchip check and municipality paperwork) | 350 to 510 |
| Cat core-vaccine visit including rabies | 200 to 400 |
| Puppy or kitten full course | 599 to 1,200 |
Treat these as a guide and ask for a written quote. A cheaper price is not always better value if it leaves out the exam or the paperwork.
Why does the vaccination record matter so much?
Your pet’s vaccination record is a working document. Proof of vaccination is needed to register a pet with the municipality, to travel with your pet, and for most boarding, daycare and grooming facilities. For import, MOCCAE requires the record to list the microchip number, vaccine name, batch number and date, and the rabies vaccine must be given after the microchip.
- Keep the original booklet somewhere safe, and take a photo of every page.
- Check that the microchip number on the record matches the chip.
- Note the next due date in your calendar or in a care planner such as Mori’s.
- Take the record to boarding, grooming and vet visits.
Mori’s health records keep vaccines and next-due dates in one place on your phone, so the date does not depend on a crumpled booklet.
Travelling or moving with your pet
If you plan to bring a pet into the UAE or take one out, the vaccination timeline becomes strict. MOCCAE’s import rules include a minimum age for the rabies vaccine (12 weeks from low-risk origins or 15 weeks from high-risk origins), and pets from high-risk countries need a rabies antibody blood test from an accredited laboratory, with a waiting period after vaccination before testing. Start early, because these steps take weeks. Our import guide walks through the sequence, and remember that destination countries have their own rules for export.
What are the signs that a vaccination has gone wrong?
Most pets feel a little sleepy or sore after a vaccine. Contact your vet if you notice swelling of the face, hives, repeated vomiting, difficulty breathing, collapse or anything that worries you. These reactions are uncommon, but they need prompt attention, and the clinic can tell you what to watch for and for how long.
Quick answers
Is the rabies vaccine mandatory for dogs and cats in the UAE?
An August 2026 insurer guide describes it as legally mandatory for all cats and dogs with an annual booster. Confirm the current rule with your vet, Dubai Municipality or MOCCAE.
What are the core vaccines for dogs and cats?
For dogs: distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus. For cats: panleukopenia (feline parvovirus), calicivirus and herpesvirus. Rabies is also required in the UAE.
At what age is a puppy or kitten first vaccinated?
WSAVA recommends starting core vaccines at 6 to 8 weeks, repeating every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, then a booster at 6 or 12 months. The first rabies vaccine is usually given between 12 and 16 weeks.
Do I need my pet’s vaccination record for boarding and grooming?
In most cases, yes. Proof of vaccination is also needed to register a pet and to travel, so keep the record and a photo of it.
